About Wikiscan
Wikiscan is an independent statistics website about Wikipedia and other wikis hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikiscan is not affiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation, and the statistics published here are not official.
Wikiscan was created in 2011 as the initiative of a volunteer user.
The majority of the software development was carried out voluntarily. A portion was funded by the Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia France association. The server hosting is provided by the Wikimedia France association.
Sources of Data Used
Wikiscan only uses public data from the wikis it analyzes, including: Wikimedia database replicas, pageview dataset, Mediawiki API.
Privacy Policy
Published Content
Wikiscan does not directly collect information from site users, and there is no registration process.
The information published on the site is sourced from public data from the analyzed wikis.
These wikis are published under the free license CC BY-SA and are subject to the Wikimedia Foundation's privacy policy, which notably states:
“Please be aware that: any content you add or any change you make to a Wikimedia site will be publicly and permanently available.”
“Publicly visible information: […] you should assume that any information you actively provide to Wikimedia Sites, including Personal Information, is publicly visible and can be found via search engines. Like most things on the Internet, anything you share can be copied and redistributed across the Internet by others. Therefore, do not provide information you do not want to be made permanently public, such as disclosing your real name or location in your contributions.”
For any corrections or deletions regarding this data, you must contact the relevant wiki. Wikiscan will then automatically update with the new information during the next updates (for example, if a user is renamed). Wikiscan cannot verify if you are the owner of this data. If there is an issue, you can send an email to wikiscan (at) gmail.com.
Technical Data
Cookies: Wikiscan does not currently use any cookies.
Audience Measurement (Analytics): Wikiscan uses Google Analytics while strongly limiting the transmission of information:
- It is used only from the server, so the visitor is never directly connected to Google Analytics servers, which receive the data.
- The IP address sent contains only the first two octets (e.g., 1.2.3.4 is replaced by 1.2.0.0).
- No use of cookies or other storage methods in the browser to identify the same user. However, to estimate the number of visitors to the site, an identifier is calculated on the server using the IP address and browser used, without being able to trace back to this information from the result (hashed with a salted function). Without this, a user visiting five pages would be counted five times. This data is not stored by Wikiscan.
